The size of motor you need depends on the boat's length, weight, water conditions, and battery size. A general rule is to have at least 2 pounds of thrust for every 100 pounds of fully loaded boat weight.

For best performance and engine longevity, Yamaha recommends using fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher (R+M/2 method) for most outboard models. The fuel should contain no more than 10% ethanol (E10). Avoid using fuels with higher ethanol content, such as E15 or E85, as they can cause engine damage and void your warranty.

Always use clean, high-quality fuel and consider adding a Yamaha-approved fuel stabilizer if the engine will be stored for more than a few weeks.

The owner's manual will include a break-in chart.

Breaking in your new Yamaha outboard properly is essential for long-term performance and engine health. Yamaha recommends the following break-in procedure for the first 10 hours of operation:

⏱ First Hour (0–1 Hour):

  • Operate at varying speeds, but avoid full throttle.

  • Keep engine speed under half throttle (roughly 3,000 RPM).

  • Avoid extended idling.

⏱ Second Hour (1–2 Hours):

  • Increase engine speed slightly, but do not exceed three-quarters throttle.

  • You may use brief bursts (less than 5 seconds) of full throttle if needed.

⏱ Next 8 Hours (2–10 Hours):

  • Operate at varied throttle levels, including short runs at full throttle (no more than 5 minutes at a time).

  • Avoid constant speed or RPM for long periods.

After the first 10 hours, you can operate the outboard normally. Proper break-in helps ensure maximum performance, reduced wear, and long-term engine reliability.

If your motor arrives damaged, please contact our customer support team immediately. We will guide you through the return process and ensure the issue is resolved as quickly as possible. Read Our Return Policy Page
